I hadn’t visited this amazing and achingly beautiful place for a decade or more. Now that I have the small RV, I’ve been meaning to get back there. This little Winnebago makes travel a joy, comfortable and easy, especially with dogs!
I knew I’d have to make the trip while it was still cool out, for the sake of the dogs! It gets very hot here, and soon. So, a couple days ago I packed up the van and “the kids” and off we went. It’s a bit of drive from Santa Fe, a little over two and half hours. I take it easy in the Winnebago. It’s tall, as RVs tend to be and I limit myself to 65 mph on the interstate. I’m sure it can handle a higher speed, but if I ever had to make any kind of evasive maneuvre with it, I’d much rather be at lower speeds.
It was an overcast day, which is unfortunate, because in the bright sunshine, you could swear that either you’re in heaven or on some other magical planet. I (we) loved every second of it. And since I have a pretty complete kitchen with me, I made cheeseburgers in the parking lot. Of course I always have goodies for the dogs. The dogs at this point in time are: Limmerick, Lucky, Flicka and Shadow. Shadow is a story for another time: another “rescue” that I fell in love with.
Native people have been living in this pueblo for probably a thousand years. There’s a shuttle that you can take to get up into the village. Again, you’ll feel like you’re in a different century, place, or planet or all of the above. I’m so glad that I didn’t put this trip off any longer. The photos are taken with what is basically a “point and shoot”. OK, it’s a little more elaborate than that, but not by much. But, I know I could get a beautiful 8 x 10 print out of it. And that enormous zoom on the Nikon P950 was almost a “must” for this location.
